It sucks man. after 3 years of harddisk problems it finally died on me.
R.I.P plus sony's horrible service we cant do anything send it in for 150$ bull s***.
Yea it sucks

it's happened to me 3 times now  what I suggest for it: is to look on craigslist.
I don't how popular carigslist is for you but for where I live it's pretty big but anyway you should look on there for someone to fix your PS3 the average price on there is like 60-100 depending on the person but that's still better than sony and they can get it done faster because there is no waiting time for shipping.
You shouldn't get the thermal compound fix because your ps3 is must likely to brake again lol
Here is the fix that you should look for:
Playstation 3 (PS3) Yellow Light of Death /
Your PS3 is disassembled and the motherboard is screwed into a custom fabricated 1/4 inch aluminum plate to prevent the board from warping during the repair. Old thermal compound is removed from the chips and heat-sinks and the board is then placed on an infrared reflow station where flux is applied around the RSX chip (the consoles GPU) to promote oxide removal and strong solder joints. The board is then brought up to a temperature above 217 degrees celcius. This is the liquidous point of lead-free solder and ensures that new solder stronger solder joints are created. Once the System is function again, which I test by powering up the system without heat-sinks or thermal compound applied; this is important because it confirms that any defective solder joints have not merely been pseudo connected through pressure, but are making an electrical connection through a solid joint, new thermal paste is applied and the system reassembled.
