PlayStation Home senior director Susan Panico said that items in the virtual world are selling like hot cakes, even if most users do not purchase from the service.

"It's a classic 80/20 model, where 20% of your customers create 80% of your income," she told Silicon Alley Insider.

She commented that companies and their intellectual properties are "a strong component of the ecosystem of Home", which she claimed is seen as a way to bring services and advertisements to households like TV cable boxes have done in the past.

Profits from downloadable items have also outperformed the PlayStation video store in its opening week.

The virtual items, including Diesel branded clothing and Santa Claus outfits, are priced at around 99p each.
