Launching only near the tail-end of last week, EA and EA Sports’ latest soccer/football sim, FIFA 11, easily managed to become the third largest videogame launch in the UK, taking the position from last year’s FIFA 10.
At launch, unit sales of FIFA 11 eclipsed FIFA 10’s effort by 21%, while revenue was up 36% over last year’s edition of the franchise.
FIFA 11 launched across six platforms this past week, with a seventh version of the game (on DS) releasing this coming week. The Xbox 360 version was the lead platform, taking 26% of the sales, while 23% of sales were on the PS3. Together, these two platforms accounted for 96% of the overall unit sales, which is up from 94% last year with FIFA 10.
FIFA 11 also accounted for a whopping 63% of Xbox 360 and PS3 units sold during this past week.
How will Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 fair this coming week in the wake of FIFA 11? It’s going to be touch and go for FIFA’s oldest rival, and in past years, the biggest thorn in EA Sports’ side.
It’s going to be one hot battle, for sure!
