I know that each PS3 has a unique serial number, but they might not check it, and they might just hand me out a replacement straightaway. A guy i know has done it before...

I don't think they are checking tbh, I've done it for my mate before plus it would be a waste of time and why would they think that it is not yours. I'd try it - But ofc ive already done it.
