At least I can fight
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A few days ago i was updating my PS3(120 GB, Slim) from 3.42>3.50

It downloaded ok, but it keeps freezing at 99% in the installation step. I left it on for a day! and it still didn't move.

The only way to turn off the power is to pull out the power cord or holding the power button for a few mins. But when i turn it back on the PS3 it starts from 1%, than stops at 99% again.

I called Sony, they told me to try and put it into safe mode, i tried but it wouldn't. They said all i can do is pay €160 to get it replaced as its a month out of warranty.

So i was wondering if any of you's could help?

You might have to update through safe mode, (it is possible on the Slim).

Activating Safe Mode

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep. At that point release the Power button. If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."

You'll need a USB with the 3.50 update on it, try that and see if it works.

~ I've also heard that removing your hard drive, then putting it back in has solved the problem for some people.

First off that sucks it's out of warranty, I swear manufacturers today put random kill switches on hardware that are set for just after the warranty expires, my ps3 had to get replaced a month after it expired, my turtle beaches just went dead 4 days after the warranty UGHH!.

Anyways back on topic, if safe mode doesn't work I would try installing the update from a usb, maybe it is just downloading wrong from the internet. Worth a try. Smile

Like i said above it won't go into safe mode, i've tried a few times. I download the 3.50 onto a USB but it won't let me do anything. When i turn on the PS3 it goes straight into the installing, not even the wavy lines or PS3 logo comes up, just straight into installing.

Yah i no what you mean, that PS3 was a replacement of my old 60 GB that the motor in the disk drive stopped working. I've tried the USB but Sony said that its a step to far for that to work.

Hm, I hate to say it, but it seems like you're out of luck then. Did you try removing your HDD then putting it back in though? I know that did work for someone on one of the older updates.

I hate giving up on ya though, best of luck man.

Yah its really annoying, it took out the HDD i have 2 other 2.5 SATA HDD but they have the wrong connection, so i cannot replace. When i put the HDD back into the PS3 it started at 1% and freeze at 99% again.

you need a new hard drive. or you can try removing the cmos battery and short it out.BRICK TYPE #1 of 3
*** 60% forever loop - Gets to between 59% to 62% displays an error.

Answer: Your bluetooth/wireless/card reader modules is either loose, NOT the original ones shipped with your machine, or they are broken or non-working in parts.

Fix: Try removing them, and replacing or cleaning the ribbon cable, if that does not work, unsolder the 8pin EEPROM containing the mac/bluetooth/usb info, and solder onto a know working module.

BRICK TYPE #2 of 3
*** 65% forever loop - Gets to between 64% to 68% displays an error.

Answer: Your blu-ray drive is either loose, NOT the original one, or part of the drive board is dead, even tho it was playing discs before!

Fix: Try removing it, and replacing or cleaning all the ribbon cables, if that does not work, unsolder the 48pin BGA firmware chip and solder onto a know working drive board (very hard to do!!)

BRICK TYPE #3 of 3
*** 99% freeze loop - Gets to 99% and just sits there looking dumb!

Answer: Either your HDD is damaged or has a bad boot sector, or the reset signal on your motherboard is not working.

Fix: Try another power supply, seems to work in my cases, or replace the small eject/reset/power board in the front of the motherboard. (If HDD, see below)

IF ALL ELSE FAILS

And the FINAL answer, if all the above fails, normal due to bad download via wireless, or hdd corrupts the update, in these cases you will normall see fails at 10% or 20%, and for sure before it reachs 50%, in ALL cases, kiss this HDD goodbye, and your save files, because if you try again with SAME HDD you will be back in a loop, and need to redo the below FIX again:

The for sure FINAL un-brick fix (if all the above fails on your unit):

#1: Remove the looping HDD, and throw it away!
#2: Disassmble your PS3, and unplug the battery!
#3: Find another PS3 HDD that is from working machine which is using the same firmware that you WERE using before!
#4: Wait about 30 minutes for the removed battery to drain from your PS3.
#5: Reassemble your PS3
#6: Turn on your PS3 with the new HDD, BUT GO RIGHT AWAY into RECOVERY!
#7: At recovery menu, pick ONLY option "RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM" (i think #5)
#8: Answer all the appearing prompts, for lang./date/time/internet, etc.
#9: You now should have a working PS3 again running on the older firmware

At this stage, you can decide to try the update again, but if it fails, again you need to throw away the HDD, and get another one, or use your PC to ZERO-FILL it to get back into the recovery menu, after setting up the ZERO-FILLed HDD on another older firmware PS3.
