Dont ever hit background download. This often corrupts data. Then when you go to install it, data is missing and it wont install. So if your having this problem delete the game, demo, etc and re download it without hitting background download.
You can also quickly hit download in background and click on the download in the download management section. This way you can see how much megabytes are left. I did this with the call of duty 5 map pack after it failed to install.
Sometimes you can hit background download and never touch the ps3. this includes sending messages and especially playing a game. But your best bet is to not even touch background download.
I hope this helped at least some of you. Oh and i recommend stickying this since there is so many posts about this happening.

I believe you can background dowload it and send messages and it won't do anything. But playing a game, watching a video etc will corrupt the data that it's sending so some of it will go missing and stuff. I myself often just send messages when it's downloading and not once has anything happened.

Yes i know sometimes it does work when you perform a background download but just in case this should be helpful!

Glad to see it has helped some of you guys because i know i get pretty mad when i spend an hour or so downloading something and i am all excited. Until i find out it wont install. So even if this helped one of you guys it was worth it

ok i always hit background download, nothings gone wrong so far but thanks for the info.

Yea but i have seen so many post this week about this error that they were getting so people couldnt install the maps. It happened to me with the maps and other demos. Including Resident Evil 5. I redownloaded it about 4 times hitting background download and my 5 time i didnt and it worked fine. Some ps3s and downloads are different i guess. Lol
