I think CFW was great. It gave user access to backing up games to the PS3, that way you don't run the risk of damaging the game and have easy access to all your games. Being able to mod your games to how you like was good, only downside was the hacking going around so people can unlock achievements and trophies. There was no need for it, ruining the concept of a game and the challenges it gave you. Once the hacking begins to spread onto the servers, making the host unstoppable made the game bad. Such as MW2, it was so easy to hack the PS3 and run patches on it that everyone had them and tried to force the host so they can have the advantage of using godmode or even removing everyones accomplishments. I think the people ruin the games because of their inability to do well or they just want to mess up peoples games. Using programs such as FTP Blackbox made it great for the user so that they can make changes to files as they please. Homebrew applications were spectactular, being able to run old games on emulators was like having an old system again but on newer tech.
Overall CFW was great, it was the users who made it bad and caused the issues of piracy and hacking that eventually got Sony to try and patch it as fast as possible. Sony would lose money for every game that would be "pirated."
Sony should just hire Geohot to make the PS3 unable to hack, or very difficult that way no one would cause this, but only if Sony agrees to make the PS3 open source in a way so we can make changes to it and backup our own games using a unique code only found on that copy. Until then we would all have to live with the PS3 being unable to do any of the things we want, that is we want to continue playing on the more recent firmware. Maybe using the new Cloud system, it can be incorporated with the unique game code so we can run backups off our system but only when we're online.
