The original ps3 had a chip to enable the play of ps2 games. Sony took it out because the manufactoring costs were too high. Same applies for the SD-card slots and 4USB ports. Back then, the production of the ps3 was higher than they sold it for. (Sony lost around 100$ per ps3 instead of getting money.)
