Your may think what you said was fact however it was a rumour with no proof at all behind it.
OP don't believe your PS3 broken just it running slow and having issues with certain patchs. Remove any patchs for the game
To increase it speed wired it to the router and remove your messages should help

maybe its just the mw2 custom patch that i kept when i updated my ps3?

Doubt that would cause it to run slow all the time
Just remove your messages and any games your having issues with remove the patchs and reinstall should fix the freezing.
Custom patchs should not do it.
