The PlayStation consoles, which are designed by Sony, are generally accepted as the best gaming consoles on the market and the countdown has already begun for the PlayStation 4 to be released. The release date for the console is estimated at late 2012 as the PlayStation consoles normally have a shelf life of around 6 years. The first console the PS1 was released in 1994, the P was released in 2000 and the PS3 was released in 2006.

The PlayStation console has a fair few competitors in the markets and the moment, with the innovative Nintendo Wii which produces a gaming experience like no other and is very cheap. It also has to compete with its arch enemy, Microsoft’s Xbox which has always tried to match PlayStation in this market.

So what can we expect from the new PlayStation, PS4.

The games will no longer be packaged in cases but instead bought online which would make the game buying process more convenient and Sony hopes making it easy would mean more sales. Specification which has been confirmed include the PS4’s implementation of the chip which shall use 6-8 cores, 24-32MB shared L3 Cache, Quad threading per core, and a double precision performance approaching 200GFLOPS. The current CELL chip which powers the PS3 can achieve 15 double precision GFLOPS at its optimum therefore this means that the PS4’s performance leap would be over 10 fold over its predecessor.

I distinctly remeber a 10 year shelf life stated when the ps3 came out.

Remember, electronics grow at an exponential rate. Compare the ps1 to the ps2, and the ps2 to the ps3. The difference is astounding.

Most game developers are only JUST starting to learn how to fully take advantage of the ps3, and less are porting straight from xbox and building straight on ps3 and xbox.

I could easily see the ps3 lasting another couple years based on its current hardware, even though most games are pushing the ps3's memory to the max, they consistently get a little more out of it after each series.


2014/15 is the likely release date, and around the time I actually want it to be released. I'd rather have hardware from 2-3 years from now, than hardware thats being made right now.

With xbox and ps3 recently releasing the kinect and move, respectively, I highly doubt that they would dump such (expensive) accessories in favour of an early console release.

So, long story short. 2012 is an unlikely story.

Am I mistaken in the fact that Sony has already stated that a Wii 2 and a Xbox "720" would be out before a PS4 would even been considered? I don't think I am..but who knows :derp:

also why would they build a new add on for the ps3 eg cpu etc to make te ps3 run better and faster and toi do much better stuff than other console can dream of if they gunna bring out ps4 in 2 years lol well cos ps4 is way head of the time . whats the point in making ps4 if the ps3 can do it but with a add on , they still make money from the add on . what could posiable could a ps4 do that a ps3 cant well better grafix simple update and the new add on , when the ps3 1st came out 3d game was just a dream but now it real how did they do it a simple update .ps4 runs faster simple update and the add on i said . bacicly , the ps3 can do so much more than we think , yeah wii 2 and xbox 720 comes out more simple update the keep the ps3 better than them in the mean time they will make a ps4 but not for al laest the min another 6 years
