Modern Warfare 3 Countdown Site's Fake: Activision
Nachiket Mhatre, Feb 28, 2011 1731 hrs IST

Says it has no role in the website which counted down to a mid week reveal.

FPS gamers and millions of Call of Duty (CoD) fans got their hopes raised by a website that came up a few days ago and a countdown promising the new Call of Duty in the middle of this week. Activision has issued an official statement deeming the website and the countdown as a hoax. It categorically denied of any role in the website. Pulling a domain look up on the website doesn't yield anything except the fact that the website seems to have no link to publisher Activision or any of the developers involved.

Speaking to gaming portal VG24/7, an Activision spokesperson clarified, "There seems to be a great deal of speculation about the next Call of Duty project. Let me be clear that we are not revealing yet. Anything indicating otherwise is a hoax." IGN was also replied in the negative when it tried to get the official word on the countdown - if Activision was going to reveal anything on Wednesday; the day that the website was counting down to.

The news broke out after the people behind the website sent CoD Modern Warfare 3 themed promotional dog tags to the websites TVGB and Joystiq with a link to the website. The dog tags proclaimed "End the War", hinting that the installment would be the final one in the Infinity Ward series with Makarov theme. The timing of the hoax, which would coincide with the Game Design Conference (GDC), gave it more credibility as the CoD Modern Warfare 2 was also unveiled at the GDC two years ago.

Hoax aside, CoD seems to be headed for a November release, with Activision subsidiaries Raven Software (Singularity) and Sledgehammer Games helping Infinity Ward to finish the game, which hasn't been in a good shape after losing president and founder Jason West and Frank Zampanella to the controversial firing by Activision.

I believe it will be hacked seeming its being made by Infinity Ward, BUT there are some other developers helping to make the multiplayer part of the game, so it could be, or could not be.

MW3 will have the same security as black ops, it may even be better security than black ops. We don't know yet, but there is a slim chance of hacks ever getting online ~ just like it is with BO. I'm sure people like CPmonkey will find the decryption key etc but getting them encrypted again to run is the problem. Also removing the encryption checks from the self file on PS3 will be much harder than from the xex file XBOX.
