Because what they do is moral and they are the reason we are able to communicate online. I am a supporter of "freedom of everything bought" because he is right, we should be able to use what we want how we want it but I don't like when people like him take that quote to the fullest extent and use it to hide behind their actions. I mean come on, he's soliciting money from people with this bs excuse about "whaa, Sony is so 1337 that they are going to pwn me, let me get some money that should have gone to bungie, EA, activison, Marvel, Capcom because they made the games you pirated and deserve the money your sending me."

People think what he did is good. NO ITS NOT. This isnt the Iphone where an app costs 99c and where most of the apps are free. His "freedom" is leading to a massive increase in PS3 pirating which is bad for ALL ps3 users because if its gets out of hand then developers are going to stop making games for the PS3 and its going to die. People glorify his actions when he probably did like 10-30% of the work while failoverflow did most of it.

Hacking is great but ignorant people need to realize that actions have consequences and that good things in life are NOT free. "Hacking" is what motivated people to make linux and all of its counterparts such as apple and all of its programs. Its great to have a community of people who want to find the minute errors in programs and fix them or take programs and implement them to a whole new level. People wanted to use the OtherOs and use the PS3's processing capabilities to do unimaginable things, look at the army, they even bought a few hundred ps3s for their own uses. Why did OtherOs get removed? Because of this numbnut Geohot who was so smart and cool that he wanted to make the "Geohot firmware." You are an idiot if you blame Sony for removing the OtherOs options. If Sony did not remove it then the pirating would have grown exponentially and who knows if the PS3 would even be here now. Look at the F***** dreamcast. One exploit was all that was needed to destroy it completely.

I know this is a hacking forum and I myself learn great things here and have great respect for everyone here regardless of their contribution, from the bottom feeder to the greatest hackers, but people need to start thinking about short term and think about the long term consequences of what some people do because as a hacker, you are an elite person whos logical capabilities are beyond those of the ordinary human. Do something good with it with intentions beyond fame (Even money is better)

It is all about freedom and he is being noticed by TOP companies by doing this, so how is he not doing something useful? He is in his early 20's and microsoft are letting jailbreak their phone (endorsing hacking for creativity) which is uncalled of but they see his talent.
Point is look where geohot is in a couple years will be a millionaire and will either be running his own company or the head of someone elses'.

look, I know about all this "freedom business." That's a minor point. You think these big companies are really enemies of each other? NO, they are huge competitors but I can guarantee that their CEOs are like best friends and go to events all the time. Have you heard of "it's not what you know, it's who you know" Well, Sony knows more people than Geohot and sony could and will make his life a living hell. You think its just "win Geohot" and its over? All Sony has to do is tell the top companies to not hire him and its over. These companies are money lovers and etc but they respect each others wishes greatly and can possible screw Geohot over. Since Geohot has not been contacted by the government its safe to say that hes just a little fish who ate a lot and is trying hard to get attention and has not gotten it yet.

Actions speak a lot louder than words and this "freedom" crap isn't very popular. I mean why not make windows free? Leopard free? all of the ways that top companies and firms use to protect their stuff free? I thought we lived in the USA where "freedom" means everything. Lets make your bank information and your address and all of your other info free for everyone in the world to see. I mean, what's the harm in telling the whole world where you live, your profession, your birthdate, etc. Would you be happy if Geohotz did that because everyone has the right to know it? I don't think so but don't we live in a free country? Think before you start going around talking about "omg, freedom is uber hax" 90% of America doesn't even know what democracy really is and what our forefathers did to attain it for everyone. Its like saying you worked really hard to create a new program like matematica or something and some new super freedom programmer came, took your work, changed around like 10 lines because hes a fighter of freedom and gave it to everyone for free because freedom is the s*** and everyone should have what you worked a year or two for just for free. Think about it from Sony's point of view. Thats why we have a judicial system. If people were one sided then we would never go anywhere. Most people here are cockS***** for Geohot because they are single minded. Fact: If you ain't open minded, you ain't going far in life.

Edit: What about the rest of failoverflow who worked for a year on this project? Aren't they more talented because THEY are the ones who discovered the flaw? People really need to stop sucking Geohot off and go learn the facts. Geohot probably did 10-30% while the others did most of the work.
