Don't tell them it's water damaged. Just tell them it's not working right. You turned it on, it was ****ed. It's even better if it's giving a faulty warning, like a yellow light on the front or a red blinking light.

They can't check it in the middle of the store, you tell them it's faulty and they'll replace it or refund it. Even if they do check it, there shouldn't be a single easy way for them to tell it's water damage, especially if the thing powers up.
