Sony have announced that they will be releasing a nice little extra with firmware update 3.60 which is to be released tomorrow (10th March 2011), which will be the PS3 online storage. But you’ll only be able to take advantage of this if you’re a Playstation Plus subscriber.

So just how will the online storage work? Well each Playstation Plus subscriber will get 150MB of space so they can upload saved game files to access at a later date, and with each save roughly around 1-2MB it gives users plenty of space available to them.

Users will then be able to access their saves on any other PS3 with an internet connection by logging in using their account and going to Saved Data Utility to find the save files. However you will need to wait 24 hours before being able to use the save file on another PS3.

Uploading your save files sounds simple enough. Just press triangle on your chosen save file and then select copy and set the destination as online storage. You will then have access to the save file for 6 months, so if you’re wanting to keep it for a longer period of time, you may want to save your files onto a USB storage device or upgrade your PS3′s HDD to a larger size.

The USB sounds like the better solution to me as buying a 1GB stick that is over 6 times the size of space allowed for the PS+ cloud service, is cheaper than the subscription itself. The cloud service is a good idea, but should your PS+ subscription run out, you won’t have access again until you renew it and as I mentioned above, they will be deleted after 6 months anyway.

Hopefully Sony will eventually make this available to all PS3 users as I can see the benefits of using such a service. Especially if you’re forever going round to your mates house, or if your PS3 gets the yellow light of death like mine did.

So what do you think to Sony’s new online storage for the PS3. Do you think it’s a bit unfair that it’s only available for Playstation Plus subscribers? Or are you like me and not too bothered about it? I’m quite happy with a trusty USB device to keep my save files safely tucked away.
