Just take good care of your PS3 that is the only way you can prevent it.

If it is a 20Gb to 60GB you heat compound is pretty bad. Do not place the PS3 in a confined space and make sure it has plenty of air to breath. The problem is when the processors heat up above the thermal compound range and then they are useless. I received it my self and have posted a tutorial on how to remove it from your motherboard.
