Here's another quick guide that is well worth doing to stream media to your PS3 from your PC.
Your devices have to be on the same network and for this guide I'm using Windows Media Player 11 on XP Professional, so if you try it out yours might be slightly different depending on version and OS.
First off launch Windows Media Player, and go to Tools>Options, and then to the Library tab. Once there go to Monitor Folder to select which Folders contain the media you want to share out.
You must login or register to view this content.
Simply select the Folders by clicking Add, when your done click OK.

Then click Configure Sharing and boot up your PS3.

Note at this point Media Player might have already found your PS3, if not continue with the next step and go to one of the media's (Photo, Video or Music) on the PS3 and select Search For Media Servers.
You must login or register to view this content.
Now back to the PC you should find an Unknown Device listed. Click on it once and then click Allow.
You must login or register to view this content.
All being well your PS3 should say it has found a media server, you can now press O to go back.
You must login or register to view this content.
There you have it, you can then scroll down to the Media Player icon on your PS3 and you should see the folder names listed from which you shared out under each media type.

Now you can save your precious HDD space for something else :derp:
