Try man it really depends. My 120Gb slim HDD won't fit into my new 160Gb HDD slot. It really depends man =D Give it a shot to see if it works.
If you buy like Arctic silver or a thermal paste you can open your fat PS3 to the NAND Chip, and if you correctly apply the paste this can fix it, the paste on your YLOD PS3 is shot right now, meaning it's dried up and starting to crack :O
