There Sony LOST in the Other OS removal battle!

Now it is only a ruling by a Consumer's Board but still the man is now able to use it in court if Sony does not cough up the 100 euros that the board ruled he should get because he lost his Linux ability after updating to play a newer game that he recently purchased!

The man at the center of the case in Finland, which was brought to the Consumer Complaints Board, lost the ability to use an alternative operating system after an update was installed from a new game. He was seeking €150 in damages for the removal of the OtherOS feature.

The CCB said that the removal of OtherOS crippled console features that were present at the time of purchase, and agreed that consumers should be compensated. It recommended that the manufacturer and seller of the console pay €100 jointly to compensate the man.

The CCB does not have the power to enforce its ruling, but the opinion of the CCB in Finland is considered by the courts in a dispute.

Now it does not sound like much, but it shows ONE MAN can stand up and get a ruling, and maybe if everyone flooded all their local Consumer's Boards in their area of the world with complaints it would make a change to the whole corporate mindset that you no longer own the machine and they can remove features at anytime they wish in the future after you paid money originally for those features.

You have to also consider how much stress and money that one man went through. Most peopel wouldn't be able/even consider it, but on the other hand, a mass amont of consumer complaints, as you said. That could possibly work

I liked the idea that you could run linux but how many people installed it for a purpose rather than for the novelty of it (it was slow)
