(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Now that someone potentially has your information what should you do? Hopefully this gives you more information than Sony gave when they basically said, "Just keep on the lookout yourself." Following these steps will help you get your life back to normal and help prevent any identity theft.*

JUST BECAUSE YOU DELETED INFORMATION ON YOUR ACCOUNT DOES NOT MEAN IT HAD BEEN DELETED FROM THE SERVER!

IF YOU ARE A MINOR, TELL YOUR PARENTS. THEY NEED TO KNOW SO THEY CAN MAKE A DECISION ON WHAT TO DO.

If you follow each step, this will only take about 45 minutes and will save you a lot of trouble later on.

Before we start anything there are a few rules you MUST follow:

  1. Never perform any activities involving passwords or credit cards on work or public connections (this rule applies at all times)
  2. Never do anything online while having other tabs or windows open
  3. Restart your computer and clear your cache and browsing history after you are done
  4. When possible do as much as you can over the phone, even though it takes a little bit longer

Once you understand that it is ok to proceed to the next steps. Each step is going to be in order of what to do.

Use this as a checklist to follow. More will be added as time goes on! The end steps may not be necessary, but it's just a simple reminder to be careful.

  1. Login to your bank account/check your credit card statement. If you see any charges that you did not make IMMEDIATELY call your bank or credit card company

  2. If all charges are valid, call your bank and have them issue you a new debit card and have your credit card company issue you new credit cards. This should be free since there is a possibility of fraudulent activity

  3. [US ONLY] Call a credit reporting bureau and have a fraud alert put on your name. This is also free.

  4. [Europe] I do not know how your credit works, but there is probably a similar system there where you can call and have an alert placed on your account

  5. Check for any accounts that have the same emai/password combination as your PSN. Twitter, facebook, anything that has the same login, you need to change the password!

  6. Do not try to use the old cards that have been cancelled (seems obvious but it's easy to forget that you cancelled them lol)

  7. Keep checking bank statements and credit card statements as time goes on just to be safe.

  8. Shred data, don't just throw it in the trash.

  9. Do not trust any emails you receive, especially if they ask for any data, I'll post some emails I've received lately for examples later.

  10. Fully destroy all digital data. Delete on a computer doesn't mean it's gone. It can still be recovered by even a novice computer person.

Extra notes:

  • Any account information is vulnerable, even if you deleted it
  • Do not assume your information was not among what the hackers got

*I do not provide any guarantee that following this will 100% prevent you from having your identity stolen. This however should prevent it from happening.

PLEASE NOTE I WILL BE UPDATING THIS FREQUENTLY AS NEW INFORMATION ARISES AS FAR AS WHAT TO DO!

PLEASE LEAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AND I WILL ADD THEM IN

Good Luck!
