(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); It's understandable that millions of PSN users are now a seemingly equal mixture of anxious and angry. However, while you may feel helpless, there is a perfectly viable way of protecting yourself from any fraudulent use of your credit card, for those that have not yet taken any action.

The section of the official PSN FAQ that drew the most attention was this excerpt;

If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, it is possible that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.
SystemLink spoke to a Sony employee today, based in the UK, who gave us the following information regarding the timeline of the hacking attacks;

- Between the 17th and the 19th of April, hackers got into the Playstation Network, as stated by the Playstation Blog.

- Between the 19th and the 20th of April, Sony started to get a flurry of some hundred complaints from users around the world, claiming that money had been charged to their account that they had no prior knowledge of.

- Sony saw the spike in complaints, and decided to check for any reason for the increase. It was then that they realized the PSN had been hacked. The PSN was then taken down as soon as possible, on the 20th April. This explains the delay between the hackers getting into the PSN, and the PSN being taken down; Sony only knew about the breach on the 20th, despite the fact it may have happened as early as the 17th.

- When Sony shut the PSN down, the hackers were removed from the system. This means that they could no longer directly use, or see, people's credit card details.

So, what does this all mean? Well, if you were one of the 100 or so known users who complained about fraudulent activity, you have to discuss that matter with your card company or Sony. But, as many have noted, there is every possibility the hackers have taken and saved your credit card information from the PSN logs, meaning they do not need to access PSN to use your card. There is a simple way to protect against this.

Almost all credit card companies around the world have an anti-fraud team, who monitor purchases on customers' cards, and see if any suspicious activity has taken place. Barclaycard can contact a customer if a transaction as small as £1 has been taken out for something that the card holder would not usually buy - for example, a £1 bet on an online poker game for user who has no history of transactions regarding online poker.

If you get in contact with your credit card company and notify them of the situation regarding you being a possible target of the PSN hack, they will monitor all transactions on your card and notify you of anything suspicious, or, if you choose, anything that you do not beforehand tell the company you will be paying for. If they find that the hackers are using your credit card, they will tell you, and your credit card will be immediately cancelled. You will not be required to pay for anything the hackers may have charged to your card - this is because the money hackers may have used is not technically your money, but the company's credit. Therefore, you have every legal right to refuse to pay for that transaction, as you were not the individual using the company's credit. It is in their interest to stop this, as much as it is yours.

UPDATE: Debit cards do not deal in any credit. While the banks may be slightly less willing to reimburse you money, as it is just your money and not the bank's credit, it is our understanding that they are still legally required to. In any case, the fact remains that debit card have almost exactly the same anti-fraud monitors as credit cards, and you can still check for, and stop, fraudulent use.

What this means is that the hackers are out of the PSN, so cannot access any new card details of yours - all they might have are the details they took from the PSN before April 20th. If you have checked with your credit card company that you did not authorize any transaction on your card between the 17th and the 20th of April, then all you have to do is tell them to notify you of any activity you do not inform them of, or if you chose, just cancel the card straight away.

Hopefully, this puts some minds at ease.
