Sony just held their official press conference regarding the PSN security attacks. A lot of the press conference revolved around information that was already given in their press release last week. They were very apologetic throughout the whole thing, but they did reveal a few interesting revelations. There was also a Q&A session which was very disappointing as they danced around every question, most of the time saying they are unsure of the full details. Most of the Q&A answers we’re based again on the previous press release sent out last week. The translations were very poor so I did the best to project the information from the conference to the best of my abilities. Let us know your thoughts on the conference below.

New Information:

– Sony will give 30 days of PSN+ and Qriocity for free to all users
–Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
– Sony are conducting a federal investigation in the US to catch the attackers.
– System software update that will require all users to change their PSN and Qriocity passwords. Can only be changed on the same system
it was created on or by the same email.
– Sony encouraging those who use the same password for PSN and Qriocity as they do for other services to change all passwords.
– Sony planning to restart some of their services within a week.
– Sony aiming to restore full services within the month.
– Sony says they will learn from this attack and enhance their data management.

New Security measures added to the network:

– Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
– Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
– Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
– Implementation of additional firewalls

Q&A:

– When asked how many credit card details were on the network, Kaz said 10 million, but they can not be sure if anyone will be at risk.
– When asked what legal actions can be taken Kaz revealed that authorities in a number of regions have come forward with inquiries and these will
be dealt with on an individual basis.
– When asked what they thought the purpose of the attack was, Kaz said they are not in a position to say due to lack of information.
– When asked about credit card and password encryption, they revealed that password information is not encrypted but credit card information was stored in a different location on the network.
