Speaking to the Financial Times, two long-time members belonging to the hacker group Anonymous says it’s likely that other group members were behind the attack that took Sony by surprised–contrary to what the group said yesterday in their press release, released yesterday.

One member from the group told FT that he saw the technical details of the vulnerability in Sony’s network prior to the attack on the PlayStation Network; the member added, “The hacker that did this was supporting OpSony’s movements”.

Another long-time member of the Anonymous group told FT that it’s very likely that other members from the group hacked Sony, “If you say you are Anonymous, and do something as Anonymous, then Anonymous did it,” said the hacker, who uses the online nickname Kayla. “Just because the rest of Anonymous might not agree with it, doesn’t mean Anonymous didn’t do it.”

At this point, we’re not sure who to believe. What do you guys think?

truth be told i dont mind who hacked sony just glad sony got some pay back i wish and hope some more happens but that just me

Anonymous is like a militia in some ways. It has centralized command, but it relies on all members to follow orders and not deviate from the path. If a member of Anonymous does something, and claims he is a member of Anonymous - then Anonymous did it, even if he was not acting on their behalf. Same with the militia - if a militiaman kills a civilian, to outsiders it was "The militia killed a civilian today," when in reality the person responsible could have strayed from the path and disobeyed orders.

It's hard to say whether Anonymous did it or not. The 'leaders' state they do not condone the theft of credit card information, and that they did not do it. While this may be true, the actions could still have been done by Anonymous' members who were acting alone and not with the central ideologies and support.

It is a bit more complicated than just saying "Oh anonymous did it". The actions of a person that dont have a name doesnt mean that the group "Anonymous" did such things. The other thing is that if anonymous are going to claim that the actions of every single one of their members are going to be considered as done by the whole group then there is no way they can get away from this one. The fact that is so disorganized, and that everyone can be part of this group makes hard to say the group did it or it was just someone that is part of the group who did.

If they brag about hacking sony in public again, and they were in NJ, they would get their nerdy asses kicked. **** with Sony, sure, but when you **** with psn users, that's a totally other story.
