If you put the hdd into another ps3, it will just get auto formatted by the new ps3. But no, it wouldn't "mess up" the other ps3. Your YLOD was caused by other problems, unless the YLOD was from a slim ps3. Then it is possible the hdd did cause the YLOD.

good to know as i have a 80gb from my other ps3 that i threw away

i currently have 60gb in my ps3 atm so i can change hard drives and use the 80gb

if it formats it im not bothered there homebrew and backups on it but thats about it
