the older models mostly indicated by 4 usb ports are bc with the 60gb being the only or one of the few to carry hardware compatibility while the 80gb is emulated
slims and newer fats are incapable

The PS2 software you see on the PlayStation Store does not make your PS3 backwards compatible if it isn’t already. It is used to emulate the fat PS2 HDD that was used for certain PS2 games, so this software is for backwards compatible models only.
* - If your PS3 has 4 USB ports, it is backwards compatible with PS2 games. But you have to know what GB model you have in order to tell if it has near-full compatibility or if it has reduced compatibility.
** - If your PS3 has only 2 USB ports, it will not play any PS2 games at all.
