Just ask them, they should be more than happy to answer any question you have about the console. Especially when they want your money

My buddy works there and I asked him before and had no clue. I bet they do not update them. Or that could just depend on who takes it in and tests them.......

I am pretty sure that the firmware on new PS3s is now 4.00, but I am not 100% certain, I bought a new PS3 from a store called John Lewis when FW 3.72 was the newest FW and it came on 3.55, but I am pretty sure since the release of 4.00, they now come on this,

Depends on your gamestop. There are 6 where I live. And 3 of them are required to update consoles returned to them the other 3 do not. I ask when I bought mine refurbished what firmwares they were on. I had to out of my way to a store that specifically told me they didn't update them... lucky for me it was on 3.40 when I bought it . But its really more of a GL thing. I recommend buying a 3.55 off craigslist or ebay if thats what you want.

I actually asked this question last time I was in gamestop. They do not update the console. It is a complete toss up as to what firmware would be on the console. They do not actually open up the console either for cleaning out anything. I believe all they do is turn it on and do a reset make sure plays games and call it refurbished.

But as the post above me states, it could be different ranging from each store.

hit or miss. they do not update or even reset the ps3 at times. iv bought used ps3's that still had the other users email and password saved to the system
with card info. i think they take them in & test them then sell. iv also asked one shop to check the fw on a used ps3 before i bought it lol, they did with a bit encouragement
