No it doesn't, it prevents accidental update and allows data transfer from a 3.72 ps3 to a 3.55 ps3

It changes your FW version to a higher number, for example, spoof a 3.55 console to 3.72 which would allow you to data transfer between the two and it would prevent you from updating to 3.72 since the PS3 already thinks your on 3.72.

Depending on what spoof you get it will just stop you from updating accidentally and can fix some other issue like Blu-ray permissions and can remove unwanted xmb folders (just to name a few).
