More than likely if it turns on fine ect your drive/ laser is shot. You could also try to rebuild the data base in recovery mode

This happened to me too (but I didn't hear a loud noise) everything worked fine except it wouldn't read disks. Had to send it off to get a new laser put in.

My slim's disc-reading laser is going bad, so hopefully it doesn't go out like yours did...that would really stink.
