The PlayStation 4 – codenamed Orbis – hasn’t been announced or even acknowledged yet by Sony. But a report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that the console, currently under development, was nearly created without a disc drive.

“Sony Corp. considered but ultimately rejected a download-only scheme for its next videogame console, people familiar with the matter said, opting to include optical disk drives rather than break with a decades-old model in the industry,” the Wall Street Journal reports. “The Japanese electronics maker’s flirtation with dropping optical drives underscores the rising importance of online networks in the videogame industry, which allow console users to download games, television shows and music without the need for disks or cartridges.”

According to WSJ, Sony is indeed “targeting” 2013 as the year the PlayStation 4 (or whatever it will ultimately be called) will come out.

om my god i hate the rumors of bull$h!t. Rule of Rumors #1 never believe them especially when they say according to people close to the matter that right there usually means that's its false like for example b4 modern warfare 3 came out all the rumors said it was going to be a prequall of when ghost joined the special forces guess what they were dead wrong! so just wait for sony to talk about the ps4 not what you hear on the internet.

Do a barrel roll!
IMO this will not work. They are still people who prefer solo to online, which will cut the fan base quite a bit.

Why would the wall street journal report on a video game system? Does not appear their area of expertise.

I Know This Is Well Off Topic But How Did You Get That Scrolling Text?

Now This In On Topic :carling:
Sony Would Not Be Stupid Enough To Make It All Done Online, If You Think About How Many People Own Playstation Consoles Who Only Play Offline, That's Allot Of People, Especially For Those People Who Don't Have A Choice Because They Don't Have Internet. So All Those People Aren't Going To Buy The New Playstation To Just Look At It Because They Cant Get Any Games For It, Therefore Sony Would Miss Out On Allot Of Sales And In Fact Probably Loose Out To Microsoft. Which Brings Me To Another Reason, Microsoft, Sony's Main Competitors In The Gaming Industry would take complete advantage of sony by keeping online and offline play And Keep Selling there games In Stores, Making Former Playstation Customers Join XBOX. This Is Not Fact And Was Not Meant To Be Just My Opinion :jim:
