Ever since news surfaced that Sony were planning an open battlefield mmo title with 256 players online I have to say we were very sceptical of exactly how the concept was going to work. Well we wait no more as after 3 years of development we have all the information for you that will explain exactly how MAG is going to be massive.

M.A.G. Is short for Massive Action Game which is exactly what Zipper Interactive are trying to achieve with this new gaming experience, an mmo on a huge scale that has 3 Factions fighting each other. The Factions have been named Raven, SVER and Valor and each has its own unique dress and fighting style. Each faction will be split up into platoons and company’s and there will be clear objectives for these squads to carry out. Players will gain experience for carrying out tasks as well as generally shooting the enemy but carrying out specific tasks laid down by your leaders will gain you extra experience and this will increase the teamwork element of the game. There will be a command network interface (CNI) to allow all players to view and get updated on the objectives of the squad and to see very clearly what has to be achieved.

Gameplay Information

The game will utilize a new server architectur to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system.Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

First in-game screenshot (from internal play sessions)Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play. The game will contain three factions: S.V.E.R (pronounced Sever), an alliance of war-torn countries; Raven, a futuristic faction with soldiers equipped with carbon-fiber armor and high-tech weaponry; and Valor, a military force with more standard gear. The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes. Players will be able to customize the face, voice, and armor of their characters, as well as what weapons and kit they carry into battle The game will be a first-person shooter.

BETA

Private beta invitations have been sent to members who applied for the beta in the first half of August. The beta has been limited to run only during designated time slots. Aside from players, this phase of private beta includes members from the press as well. Zipper Interactive revealed the official public beta would launch on September 17. Annual subscribers to Qore who subscribe before September 17 will have a chance to get into the beta on September 17.

Communications Channels And Game Modes

The communication will be carried out over 3 separate channels. The squad communication channel will be used to talk to all squad members whilst the Command channel is for squad leaders to talk to each other to work out the strategy for winning the battle and the last channel is so the platoon leaders can talk to the Commander. There are sixteen squad leaders and four platoon leaders per faction and then there is the top job of Commander. The ability to become a leader is not something which is just selected as a game option it is gained by the players ability’s and success from previous games and becoming the commander is something which only the top players will be able to gain. This will protect squads and platoons from being led into battle by new players with no tactical awareness and will make for better game play.

Experience gained in the battlefield can be used by players to increase their characters ability’s and what is interesting is that you do not pick a class of character from the beginning of the game. The players character is something which is built up over time and reflects what you have been doing in the game and therefore your character will take on a role which best reflects your playing style.

Game Modes are pretty much what you would expect from such a title with slight twists to avoid everyone converging at one point, however ultimately this happens in the end. The game mode “Escort” involves stealing enemy vehicles and is probably a slant on capture the flag, whilst “suppression” looks like team death match and “Domination” looks to be the big game ending with all out war.

So it all looking very good from Zipper Interactive and their will be a beta game before the official release, probably to test out the servers in the hope it wont all fall over on launch day. The game will be rated T for Teen so don’t expect to see blood and guts spilled out everywhere, we assume this is to get the maximum audience that such a huge game will require.

Factions

Sver

Sver soldiers are aggressive, prideful, guerilla-like militia. Despite being considered the underdog by Valor and Raven soldiers, Sver soldiers never give up and fight with their hearts and bretheren. With their punk-like appearance, they strike intimidation and wearniess in any who oppose them. Their ability to come out on top with a low-budget and in the clutch is something that no one should ignore. If you believe that Sver are nothing compared to Valor and Raven soldiers, think again. Their stealthy teamwork should be reckoned with. If you are rebellious and do excellent under pressure, choose Sver as your faction.

Raven

Raven soldiers are shady and mysterious. Being extremly well-funded, their uniforms are dark, carbon fiber, sleek, clean, high tech, and top-of-the-line. Because of their immense amount of funding, they settle for technology more than manpower in combat situations. However, they aren't lacking in manpower. Although teamwork is not their strongest attribute, they are capable of using complex teamwork to out-perfom the other factions. If you love technology over teamwork and skill, Raven is perfect for you.

Valor

Everyone daydreams of being the rugged, insensitive veteran at least once in their life. As a Valor soldier, you are a muscular, hardcore, home-grown American soldier who knows what it means to value their team and ability to intimidate their enemies. Being of 20th-century appearance, Valor soldiers usually are wearing camo, face-paint, and M4A1s. Although they do not have technology that is up to standard in the eyes of Raven soldiers, their teamwork and skill make up for their lack of efficient technology in the world of Mag. If you love your country, perform great as a team, and like whiskey, choose Valor as your faction.
