Post: How to avoid YLOD

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Understanding how it works (YLOD):
The greatest amount of wear 'n' tear on solid state circuitry comes from the heating up and cooling off of the elements (diodes, capacitors, etc). By leaving the device on, you maintain the temp and have less in the way of expansion and rarfaction (the hot/cold cycle) in the circuitry, which is what causes the layers of the diodes, etc. to peel apart or separate from one-another, eventually causing them to wear out.

Specifically How In The Ps3? (contributed by opdutch51)
Ps3's get the YLOD from bad unleaded solder. It gets cracked and brittle which is what leads to the failure of the GPU.

So don't turn off your ps3 every day thinking your doing it for the good. Leave it at the red light and eject the disc out if possible.

Tips and Recommendations
Placing the ps3 in vertical position exposes more surface area and is recommended to place in this position. Eject the disc out whenever you can. Vaccuum the ventilation once every one to two months.

Note: Don't tip your ps3 off when its in vertical position so make sure its in a secure place and out of child's reach. You don't have to keep it upwards, horizontally is good too.

my dad wont let me spend 50$ to get it fixed he would rather just get a nother one lol.

You talkin to me?
I've read that leaving the PS3 vertical can screw up the discs...
I like to have a ceramics plate underneath my ps3 so it doesn't heat up.

if you read the "Note" part of the section, it explains the risks and benefits of leaving it in vertical position. He suggessted to remove the disc and warned you about the ps3 may tip. Those two factors can damage your disc. Any movement while the disc is in the ps3 can cause damage, obviously in vertically position the system could shake or fall down with any movement outside. Ideally, vertically position is the safest but in real world accidents do happen.

what i do with my fat PlayStation 3, I put a circle like thing underneath it so it keeps it up and cool...(its laying horizontal).then toke off the hdd cover, put a fan next to my PlayStation. so it blows the hot air out and keeps a circulation of air. Shiver

As long as you don't play ps3 for more than 6 hours a day you should be fine..

Well, when I say it can screw up the disc, I mean even during gameplay, at the safest possible place (well secured and taut). Unless you plan to play a disc game without the disc! Gasp haha

Also, on the left side (Horizontally) or bottom side (Vertically), there are a few lil' gaps, when I put my hand near the gaps, I can feel it being significantly cooler. Just a hypothesis but I believe that's where the air gets into the ps3, and the fan shoots the air out from the back and right (Horizontal)/ top (Vertical). Maybe I'm going crazy, and all of this isn't true, but I'd prefer my PS3 horizontal, no matter the case- as it's very well ventilated ^^
