Not seen many posts about the yellow light of death so i thought i would make one, going to try keep it brief
What is the YLOD and how is it caused?
Well the YLOD of death is caused when your playstation system overheats causing the CPU/GPU to preform cracks in the solder, doing this your playstation system is not making a proper connection with the motherboard causing the YLOD. This is mainly aimed at the PHAT systems as there design is allot more susceptible to the YLOD.
Myths and facts on the YLOD
Alot of people think the YLOD is caused because you have bad airflow around your PS3 causing it too overheat, well this is not entirely true. Your fan and airflow do help with this problem but this is only half of the problem. The underlining problem is the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU has dried out. The heat sync on your system is the main component for absorbing the heat that the CPU/GPU give off and they can get very hot believe me. The thermal paste between these too is what allows the heat to be properly transferred into the heat sync keeping the CPU/GPU from overheating. So going out and buying some big modded fan to keep the system cool will not stop the YLOD it might help but will not solve the underlining problem because the heat sync is not absorbing heat due to the thermal paste. You could have the fan at its top speed or even a modded fan but the system will not cool down if the paste is dried/shot.
Prevention of YLOD
Ok so the best way to prevent the YLOD of death is too simply replace the thermal paste, apply it correctly and use a better high quality paste because SONY the cheap bastards use some crappy thermal paste and wonder why the YLOD has happened to so many playstation systems. I recommend using artic silver 5 as this paste is definitively to a high standard and gives a good connection between your heat sync and CPU/GPU. Not only can it help with prevention but it can also help with you guys out there that have preformed a reflow on your system, thermal paste is very important.
Thermal paste and the proper way to apply it
All over the internet i have seen many video of people preforming a reflow on there system using a heatgun, flux and thermal paste. However even half of these so called experts do not apply the thermal paste properly. They either use too much or too little paste and one month late the YLOD of is back.
The correct way to apply your thermal paste is like this :-
This is the proper way to apply your thermal paste. As you can see you do not need alot at all. The is because all the heat from the CPU/GPU is distributed from the center of the chips. Now you do not need to spread this thermal paste simply apply your heat sync straight on top and give it a little wiggle. this will spread the thermal paste properly and ensure there are no air bubbles. You want a good connection between your CPU/GPU so ensure when your putting your system back together everything is tight around but not too tight
Reflowing/Reballing your PS3 System - Heatgun Method
Here i will not tell you how to reflow your system as there are hundreds of videos on how to do this on youtube. I will recommend a video here :-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo.
Reflowing your system is a relatively easy process even for you first timers who have never opened up your system. It involves using a heatgun which you can buy for about £10) to reset the solder and fix the cracks. However this will not completely fix the problem as there is a chance it can reoccur. For anyone out there doing the hair drier trick i suggest you reflow your system as you are just going to mess it up even more using a hair drier. Furthermore if you do a proper reflow job and apply your paste/flux properly you may not experience the YLOD again unless you do something stupid like go on vacation and leave your PS3 on
All these steps can be avoided if you take care of your system and re-apply some new paste (artic silver 5 ) before your system gets the YLOD. I suggest to everyone that uses there system alot to at least every 6 months replace your paste and keep your system YLOD FREE
If you have reflowed your console and found that it keeps reoccurring the you have the opions of getting it reballed. Reballing is the process were all the solder is wiped from the CPU/GPU and replaced. Most professionals that do this use lead free solder which is alot less likely to fail even after hard use.
I have had alot of questions asking me if you can use a hairdrier on the CPU/GPU to fix the solder cracks. The answer is NO you need to use a heatgun that gets as hot as 700-750 degrees. A hair drier will not get nearly as hot as this.
Reflowing - Oven Method[/U]
If you really cant afford or be bothered to get a heatgun you can do the oven method. This can be done safely and i have done this before. However the heatgun method is alot better and less chance off messing up if your a first timer to this. However if you are thinking of using the oven to reflow this is what you need to do :-
- Cover all plastic component on the motherboard with bluetac.
- Then wrap tin foil around the areas you have blue tacked.
- Wrap the whole motherboard with tinfoil leaving the CPU/GPU exposed.
- Gas mark 7 for 10 minutes
- Remember your still going to need your thermal paste.
- Put tinfoil around the edges of an ovan pan and rest the motherboard on that (you need to make sure the CPU/GPU are straight when in the oven or else they may slip of point and this will not do you any good). Using an oven pan can do a good job of this and Remember only do this if you know what your doing as the heat gun method is alot safer to you first timers.
- Oh and dont forget to let the motherboard cool off after the 10 minutes. Leave for around 30 minutes and also when lifting up the motherboard be gentle you do not want it to bend slightly or anything like that. Place it again were it can be level and cool down.
PS - [/U]Thats all for now i will probably add more to this thread later, hope it helps guys. Any questions comment below im pretty knowledgeable when it comes to YLOD have repaired many systems perfectly.

This is true, the design of the slimline is much better, but for most of us 3.55 users we have a fat and slim system for our CFW and OFW. Soo i suppose keeping your CFW from YLOD is very useful

This is a really good thread to read and learn from if your trying to fix a YLOD ps3. Well done, if i ever get YLOD if the future, ill make sure to check this out again. ^_^
