PlayStation 4 to launch during 2013 holiday, predicts analyst

Although Sony hasn’t officially announced a PS4, speculation regarding its launch has been a topic of discussion as of late.

On Wednesday afternoon, Michael Pachter shared his thoughts on when Sony has to launch the PlayStation 4 and why they need to do it.

According to a report on NowGamer.com, while talking to Play magazine, Pachter stated, "I don't think Sony wants to launch behind Microsoft again, so I'm confident we'll see a PS4 in October or November 2013.”

"It isn't likely that they will launch earlier, as it doesn't make sense to get out too far in front of software, and I'm pretty confident that few developers have been working on PS4 games for more than a year or so. Holiday 2013 will be a comfortable window for Sony, and will give them a chance to get a head start on Microsoft."

Even after the PlayStation 4 launches, Patcher expects the PlayStation 3 to continue to sell well as Sony can give the home console a number of price cuts to extend the PS3’s life.

"The PS3 probably has a solid three years left for sales, so it should make it comfortably to a 10-year life span," he shared. "There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable spending $250 for a console, so I think price cuts to the $199, $149 and $99 will extend the life of a console."

Given that high-quality software like Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us” and Quantic Dream’s “Beyond: Two Souls” are set to debut in earl 2013, it could be a busy and expensive year for Sony fans if the PS4 does indeed launch during the 2013 holiday season.

Personally I don't believe this cuz Sony said they aren't changing the system until 2015 plus they just released the super slim so it doesn't make sense

As I always say, theres only been a couple games to actually fully use and grasp the PS3 hardware to the max. I don't think sonys even remotely finished with it. However they are likely to start shipping PS4 dev units sometimes next year. Not the actual models internationally however. Plus theres been no news of PS4 dev units. So untill the slightest has been heard about them, I don't think we'll see a new product within the next year.

Actually mate those PS3 Dev units are out there:

A new version of the PlayStation 4 dev kit is currently being distributed to developers with the final version expected next year, according to a new report.

Anonymous sources have reportedly told VG247 that new versions of the Orbis kit are winging their way to developers, replete with Blu-ray support and housed in the humble cases of normal PCs.

This is apparently the second iteration of the dev kit; the first, which appeared earlier this year, was in essence just a graphics card, while this version is now a "modified PC". The report asserts that the next update will come in January, when it'll be close to final specifications, with the ultimate version landing with devs next summer.

The shipping of the Orbis kit apparently follows a series of meetings held by Sony in the US this week, where the company explained what the machine was designed to do and how to get the most out of it. Interestingly, at these meetings it's been claimed that Sony didn't refer to the machine as "the PlayStation 4" at all, instead opting to use the "Orbis" title at all times.

The dev kits are apparently based on the AMD’s A10 APU series and come with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, as well as the Blu-ray drive already mentioned and a 256GB hard drive as standard. This is to ensure that the console will be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D.

The Orbis kits have both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, as well as HDMI out slots; so pretty much exactly what you'd expect to find on your current PlayStation 3. However, the big reported difference comes with the UI, which has been designed to be more fluid and allow extensive navigation anywhere on the system simply by pressing the PS button mid-game. This was demoed to the assembled masses by purchasing DLC from the PS Store without quitting the game.

No details were leaked about the system's controller. IGN reached out to Sony for comment, but were told the company "doesn't comment on rumour and speculation."

If you're looking for more info on the Orbis, we've dissected the reported components that make up the dev kit before, as well as what it could mean for Sony's prospects in the next generation of consoles.

Remember aswell they released the PS2 slim around the same time as PS3 launch.

It wouldn't make sense for the PS4 to come out in such quick succession to the PS3 super slim..
I'll just wait and see, that would be awesome if they do release.

Version 1 and 2 of the code name "Orbis" dev kits have already been sent, with version 3 to follow around January and version 4 in Summer 2013.

There are more than a few games that are pushing it on ps3. Most games out atm have terrible fps on console and the only reason ps3 gets away with them is the small draw distance on detail, items etc..
