I Have Done This and it is 100% Legit. My PS3 Hasn't froze sense!
Basically, what you do is get 4 Gatorade or water Bottle caps, and put them on each corner or the PlayStation. Basically what this does is helps the hot air vent out of the PlayStation. It is also good to have it in a open area... not in a bookshelf, cabinet ect..

keep your inbox on ps3 empty or to a minimum sent messages too this will help keep from freezing

This does work, you lay your ps3 down on its side and you can use a variety of objects to prop it up such as tuna cans and bottle caps. The whole point of this is to keep it raised off the service which enables better circulation
