Post: Help connecting to wireless?
10-24-2009, 01:23 AM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Normally I'm on a wired connection, But I'm temporarily going wireless. I scan for for an access point & go on my own Wi-Fi, Which has 100% signal strength. I click automatic for every thing. & @ the end it claims It can't obtain IP address. So I go through it again, But this time I enter my IP & DNS stuff manually, And it still can't obtain IP address. I don't understand why I can't go wireless, All my info is correct. Help please?

For the security page, did you choose 'None' when you do in fact have security on your wireless signal?

I have a WEP key. I put the 10 digit number from my modem.

Do you have a block on your router? For instance...

My [Netgear] wireless-n router has a feature to only allow connections from devices with a specific MAC address. So if you don't add the physical address (MAC address) of the device to the access list, that device won't gain access even if it has the right information.

You need a router because the modem only supports wired network.

Obviously, he has one...otherwise he wouldn't have a wireless signal.

You said you got the wep key off the modem? that doesn't sound right. you should have a disk that will set up the wireless again so you can set up a new wep key.your internet provider can also get the right wep key for you.

The discs that come with routers are usually to setup the software for PCs. They're unnecessary. All you need to do is login to the router and [change/write down/remove] the key. Also, maybe he chose to use the number on his modem as his WEP key. One more thing, the only way your ISP can get the key for you is by going to your house and doing something that you, yourself, can do.

My lynksys cd allows me to edit/change my wep key.To login to the router you might need a username and pass to access it. Keep that in mind.
