One the biggest selling points of the PlayStation 3 is that gamers can use the console to play online at no additional charge. However, evidence has surfaced that the company is planning a two-tiered subscription model for the PlayStation Network similar to--but also fundamentally different from--Xbox Live.

Slides accompanying a Thursday presentation by Sony show that the company is planning a "new revenue stream from subscription" on PSN in 2010. During the presentation, which emphasized Sony's plans to make its game business profitable in the next fiscal year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed the plans. "We will be building upon our current free [PSN] service offering with premium content and services to start the subscription model," he told attendees.

Probably free avatars, betas, things on a monthly basis. If you look in the avatars page on your PSN, there is already a premium selection( but empty). I see them making animated avatars to get ppl to join.

No big deal if there just offering another tier and the current psn will stay the same.

I am premium here and I subscribe to Qore so I guess I can get premium psn as well. I just hope I don't regret it sony tends to only think about the $$$ and forget us once they get it.

i would only consider going back to psn and paying if i new my connection would be as good as when im playing live and if the benifits for paying get you worth while exclusives if your gonna pay for a service and get exclusive news and avatars n stuff thats pretty pointless then there would no use in the service and would probably be a big faliure but maybe it will be good and might bring me back to psn

if i have to pay ill think 360 is better but if i dont then ps3 still better but if i do ill be soo pissed off with sony

I don't care what they do... As long as it's free.
