I'm on a wired DSL connection (5.2 down; 0.65 up) and it always seems like the other person sees me first, and there's nothing I can do about it. I disable wireless on my modem, and I unplug my computer's ethernet cord so the ps3 is the only thing using bandwith. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

I have this same problem only sometimes. Most of the time I do okay.
