PSN Is Down In Inaugural Outage Of 2016

Sony managed to skate through the holidays with only minimal interruptions to the PlayStation Network. There was usual heavy traffic but no direct (successful) attacks or takedowns the way we saw with the
Lizard Squad fiasco of last year.
But today, PSN is down, and has been for almost there hours now. Sony isn’t offering an explanation as to why, though they have acknowledged the problem exists (*
cough cough Valve*). Right now, the status page is a bright red list of offline services, and users are taking to social media to express their discontent.
PlayStation’s support page now displays the following message: “We are currently under maintenance and you may be experiencing issues. We appreciate your patience,” though maintenance on PSN was not previously announced, and this is probably in fact related to them working on a fix as to whatever’s gone wrong.
We’re approaching the three hour mark of the outage, and in North America, at least, players are about to come home from work or school and find the service offline. Hopefully Sony will have this sorted soon, and it isn’t some sort of sustained attack on the service.
Stay tuned for more information about PSN’s status, and check back here for updates.
Update (5:28 PM): Some users are reporting being able to log back in, but for the most part, PSN remains inaccessible and service warnings have not yet cleared.
