You want something that can record and edit in one program. Sony vegas would work. There are many. I use pinnacle studios because it came with my capture card and its easy to use. There is recording details somewhere =]

I use my laptop cam but it's not very good with Windows Movie Marker and its terrible cause my friend has Sony Vegas and it's the best out there

At Novus Ventus we use a Dazzle DVC Recorder for Capturing.
It is simple to use and has great quality.
For editing any version of Sony Vegas will work as others have mentioned.
For simple things I suggest 7, 8 has many bells and whistles a small time editor wont need for simple montage like things.

Depending on how in depth you are going with your filming and editing, there are many other programs in my personal arsenal which I use when I record voices, do script writing etc.
