Continuing in its efforts to increase consumer awareness regarding its PlayStation 3 videogames console – while working to haul back the competition – Sony Computer Entertainment has this week pounded its corporate chest regarding the platform’s performance in the UK.
More pointedly, the consumer electronics titan has said the powerhouse gaming system has now sold more than three million units throughout the United Kingdom – openly attributing the market push to the (long awaited) hardware price cuts rolled out in the latter part of 2009.
“We’d like to offer a huge thank you to our retail partners in helping us pass the 3 million PS3 milestone,” trumpeted Sony’s Ray Maguire in a press statement.
“The 249GBP price point is enabling us to reach a much broader audience and our line up of software, Heavy Rain, and God of War III – and that’s just in Q1 – should help maintain the momentum,” he added.
In terms of UK traction associated with the PlayStation 3, adoption figures offered up by ChartTrack and retail giant GAME show that Sony’s console has sold some 800,000 units across the region since the end of June last year.
However, despite the benefits gleaned from more tempting UK price points, Sony’s PlayStation 3 still trails both the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360, with the former placed at over six million unit sales, and the latter around four million.
