You absolutely can. That being said, if it's not worth it then it's not worth it and that's your call. In my own opinion, at least, gaming should be fun, not stressful.
If you keep at it, my best advice would be to concentrate on the subchallenges. In each of the main challenges, working on the subchallenges is the key to getting a higher and higher score in the main challenge itself. Some are more helpful than others. If I'm reading the main post right, because of a bug (in the save file maybe?), you might only need a bronze in the main challenge in order to pop the one for gold in all main challenges. I'm guessing the one that is left is Black Friday.
