(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.

I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."

So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?

"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line.
"So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:

"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"

I said I thought that was fine.

Interestingly, I also spoke to a Sony source elsewhere at the event this evening who told me that the anti used-game patent You must login or register to view this content. was actually nothing to do with PlayStation 4 at all.

The patent suggested that discs would come branded with a contactless tag that could be recognised and read by your console, which would then bind it to you and prevent you from selling it on.

But whatever reason Sony did have for patenting it, it sounds like it wasn't for its next-generation console. Hopefully Microsoft will also avoid this ludicrous technology with its next-generation Xbox as well.

great news to me, although i buy my games new, some games ive had to part with and then at a later date ive brought them again but used, if i had to do that again for the ps4 and i could play them games again i wouldnt bother buying a second time but this time round ill be buying new all the time anyways

Error… Cat invasion!
If Sony were to block discs like this, I can assure you it would kill the used game market such as GameStop since alot of its sales come from used titles, plus the biggest backlash of gamers ever for doing it, its already bad enough that digital distribution is locked to Profile ID's but from a business standpoint; its understandable due to pirating, but physical media being restricted & locked to 1 console/ ID would be the worst move ever.

Am still trying to find information about your PSN ID carrying over. I hope it doesn't.

I really dont hope it does either, a new fresh start & a chance to redeem an already taken PSN ID would be marvellous indeed. Happy

Is there any logical reason about this? You would lose everything you have done in the PS3! Also, consider they had already said that the PS+ will be carried over to the Next Gen so...I believe accounts will be carried over.

Now, sticking to the topic. For me is great that people can have the Cloud as an 'instant' option and the Disc for those who like to have it physically.
The only downside I find in the cloud is the download speed, depends on each country and user internet limitation in when they will get the Full Game. For example, the maximum you can have in my country (Argentina) is 30mb and it's no way cheap.
Furthermore, take into account that if you don't enable discs the PlayStation will lose a very good feature that is reproducing Blu-Ray movies, or music dvds and videos. Some of the people I know bought the PS3 mainly for this, then because of the games.
Considering the Online Pass topic, I believe its not Sony's fault, it's about the companies trying to make some ridiculous profit from those Online Passes, but well, if they still exist it's because they are working.

I will assume you must like trophies more then the game itself. Now am not saying it's a bad thing but I would start over regardless. If I am able to re-acquire the I played on the PS3 to the PS4 then good.

You said they are saying PS+ will carry over, ok but that could mean just the program itself coming to the PS4. Right now everyone trying to read to much into everything. They may not let us have more then 5 accounts.

They gave so little info to get ppl speculating about what if's and what not's. I am starting a new account.

If they do that then the years of work people spent on their PSN account will be down the drain.

And as they said how PS+ was being carried over, I'm sure the account database is as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if they implemented this in the next-next gen consoles.

I enjoy gettin' trophies as much as I enjoy the game. First I finish the game, concentrated on it and then if I like the game and I'm missing some trophies I go for the plat or get the shit out of them.
