Crytek has pushed the limits of gaming visuals for a long time, ever since the original Far Cry was released almost 10 years ago. Since then, they’ve made several Crysis games, each pushing the limits of any hardware platform it ran on.

And obviously, Crytek will be developing for the PlayStation 4. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said in a recent interview that next generation console development — PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 — will be driven by PC developers, who will have a much easier time making games. This is because the PlayStation 4 is based on PC hardware, and the Xbox 720 is expected to be based on the same architecture.

Yerli says that last generation was tough on developers, as going from PS2 to PS3 and from Xbox to Xbox 360 was “back breaking”, as he puts it. This time around, game makers are much more familiar with the architecture of the PlayStation 4. This works well for both console and PC gamers: console gamers will see more PC developers create games, as it’s now a lot easier and cheaper. And PC gamers will see better console ports since there will be no need to make changes to the underlying software.

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 back in February, and ever since then developers have constantly praised the console and Sony for going with a simpler, PC-based architecture. The PlayStation 4 already has support from major game engine makers, including Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. You must login or register to view this content.
