(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); We originally thought that the PlayStation 4 reserved 1 core and 1 GB of RAM for its operating system. Now Sony has revealed the truth, and it’s much scarier: The PlayStation 4 OS uses two out of the 8 cores, and a whopping 3.5 GB of RAM.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 design docs reveal that developers have “guaranteed” 4.5 GB of system RAM for their games, which can be boosted to 5.5 GB in certain cases, if the developer needs more memory (and Sony would have to approve of this).

This is a big revelation, as it shows a massive OS that runs on the PlayStation 4. The Xbox One uses almost as much, as it has reserved 3 GB for the OS. This is a tremendous jump in memory OS requirements compared to the current generation, where the PS3 and Xbox 360 use around 50 MB (MB!).

When the Wii U was revealed last year, Nintendo was ridiculed for using 1 GB of system RAM (50%) for the OS. Now that pales in comparison to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

We keep praising the PlayStation 4 for its 8 core CPU and 8 GB of RAM, but the truth is, games will only use 6 cores and 4.5 GB. Which doesn’t sound as impressive, to be honest.

No game would have used all 8 cores anyway nor all 8GB's of RAM, I'm all honesty this is no surprise to me at all, just common sense. :p

Actually the custom built in-house background processor takes care of these.
