H1Z1 is supposed to be a mutation of the H1N1 bird flu virus. Causing people who get infected to become zombies. Obviously. Other than that, there isn't much more of a back story. Yet...
The game takes place 15 years after the virus takes over. This is an important aspect that effects game play right off the bat. For example, traditional sources for food, water, and other essential resources for survival have already been picked clean. Here is the link to the official H1Z1 website. Unfortunately they're so complicated, tedious to type, and honestly not that important so I'm leaving them out. (also not a fan of copy pasting someone elses)
On to the good stuff.
The game is scheduled to have a paid pre-alpha at a cost of $20 on steam with the possibility of a beta on the Ps4 sometime in the future. It hasn't been confirmed for the PS4 yet, but when asked the response was "well, we are Sony". Many have taken this as a comfirmation, we'll just have to wait and see.
...................................H1Z1 devs took to Twitch tv on April 17th to give us our first glimpse of game play. Here they also answered questions live during the stream. The most important info the gave us was a time when we can expect a pre-alpha, four weeks. May 17th-ish.
I for one am excited as hell for something like this, mainly because of the hopes of it hitting the Ps4. I'll keep updating this thread with the most important info as often as I can.

What do you guys think? Are you excited? Is it just a DayZ rip off?
