Sony kicked off its Gamescom 2014 press briefing with big news: nine months since debuting its PlayStation 4 console on Nov. 15, Sony has sold 10 million units to consumers worldwide. The sales represent consoles sold through, which means purchased by consumers and not simply shipped to retailers.

Sony revealed in February that it had sold 5.3 million consoles, so the company has sold nearly double that in the past six months. This figure represents the "fastest and strongest" growth in PlayStation hardware in Sony's history.
Both the PS4 and Xbox One went on sale in November 2013. But Sony has outpaced Microsoft in the Xbox One vs. PS4 battle.
