The long-awaited title is being published by Electronic Arts and developed by DICE, creators of the popular Battlefield series of first-person shooters.

Developers have made it clear that Battlefront will be based off of the traditional Star Wars films and will not be based off of the new trilogy currently in production. Patrick Soderland of Electronic Arts stated, “What we’re building is more rooted in the traditional Star Wars Universe and not so much necessarily linked to the movies being made.”

This news will no doubt come as a relief to many fans of the series who have been clamoring for years for a true follow-up to the Battlefront series. Some were worried that the game would be based around the new films so as to promote the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, but it looks like this is not the case.

This announcement is in-line with other recent news indicating that gamers will be seeing a few familiar locations from the original Star Wars trilogy. Developers have been playtesting the game as of late and sharing some of their impressions about the new Battlefront on Twitter.

One dev indicated that the famous Mos Eisley Cantina, or a “wretched hive of scum and villainy” as Obi-Wan put it, will be featured in Star Wars: Battlefront. Another playtester stated that he had fun “playing around in the snow,” which is most likely a nod to the iconic icy planet Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back. Hopefully, players will be able to experience the famous battle featuring the massive Imperial AT-AT walkers.

Star Wars: Battlefront does not have an official release date yet, but it is speculated that it will launch in late 2015 ahead of the debut of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

I'm hyped for this, I remember playing Star Wars Battlefront on my PS2. I would literally play it everyday with my younger brother, non-stop, constant nagging, and being a tropper was bad ass lol.

Believe it or not Star Wars battle front 2. Was the first ever game I played online on ps2 back when you'll need a Ethernet cable and a gamespot account ah good times :/

Yep same here I played it on PS2 it was an excellent game. I also played it on my PSP.

This is probably going to be a really great game, all the battlefronts have been really fun to play and im hoping the franchise impresses us this year

maybe a fps game to give cod a run for its money if this is done right its going to kick cods ass
