I tried it with a friend as well and it worked perfectly. I mean, he lives like 5-10mins away from me to begin with so I don't know if that would help at all.

Does this rely on PSN servers in any way? If it does then we're screwed, and might as well not be there.

No it doesn't, my internet speed is fine. I have 76mb download speed, 12mb upload speed.
It depends on PSN being up to the job or not.

It depends on your connection.

I have fibre and I tried it yesterday with someone who's internet isn't the best in the world and he kept getting an error saying his connection is too slow.

My point is, that even if you have the best internet speed in the world, you can't count on PSN servers being able to cope. They haven't exactly been the most reliable the past few weeks,

ok mayby it was have the inputlag only on that day we tryed around 20h after the update was released so mayby the psn was still overloaded
but that you cant do anything agains the region lock is piss me a bit
