It works offline, but when i go online it says:

Your Xbox LIVE membership information isn't valid. Please use a profile that contains a valid membership or recover your profile from Xbox LIVE.

use the search bar and look for Transfer kit

BTW to all those people who think this is permanant it isnt

There is a way for this to work on XBL but once you sign out then back in
you need to recover your account

The reason You pay to change your gamertag is because the XBL servers save your info PERMANANTLY
