Post: How to become a legit 50 un Halo3
02-12-2010, 11:15 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Alright, here's how it is:

Lone wolves is the way to get your level to 45. If you want to get to 50, go double team. There's less players, so less figures go into the trueskill system. Easier for leveling.

Get a good partner and rock the double team once you've gotten a 45 in lone wolves. Doing this will give you good experience on what to do by yourself in games, as you will do a lot in double team. Also, a partner will be able to pick up on what you lack, or if you're just having a bad game, they can save you the possible level loss.

Most of all- play to eachother's strengths and use teamwork. When you see your friend go 1 on 1 with someone, pop their opponent a BR shot. this will ensure victory for your teammate, thus giving you a point. High level double team is not where people should use the sniper just because it's a way for easy kills. If it takes you 3 shots to kill someone, give it to your partner who'll get 2 or possibly 3 kills out of those 3 shots.

Call out where opponents are. This will help you spring attacks. Call out where someone has no shield, so a nicely thrown grenade can finish up an enemy once your partner dies taking out their shield. LEARN MAP CALLOUT NAMES! (S2, S3, BR3, Top Blue). "On my X" is a terrible callout. Your X could be anywhere on the level, and your teammates would have to look around to find it. Your symbol even shows through walls. Specific locations are better. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn callouts.

Map Callouts

Know who has what weapons. If one opponent has a sniper, try to keep a BR and some good close range weapon. This will let you BR at him from afar, letting you get in close where you can pull out your close range weapon. If your teammate has a sniper, grab a BR and a close range to back him up. BR to clean up his kills. It's better to waste a BR shot than a second sniper bullet. Keep your close range ready in case of a rush.

Remember that damage is decreased a little bit when duel wielding a weapon. A single SMG can prove to be a vital close range weapon. I prefer single SMG over AR anyday. Dont let this deter you from using duel wielding. Look at it like this: SMG has attack power of 4. When you dual wield, each weapon's attack power is reduced by 1/4 of the original attack power. So, each SMG now has a power of 3 (1/4 * 4 = 1). Now, you have two, so you're new attack power is 6 (3+3=6). 6 is nice, but 4 isn't bad either, and with a single, you have access to grenades. But, with dual wielding, you have more bullets out at a single time. Instead of firing 10 bullets a second, you're firing 20.

You should always carry a BR. Always. BR is just too essential to pass up. It's long range gives you an advantage over AR spammers, just walk backwards and headshot. If a friend dies, you have a 3 shot spray to pick off the guy with no shield he left for you from his fight. Some people prefer Carbine over BR, and i say it's really preference. If you have a shieldless opponent, BR is easier to headshot, as you have a bigger spread when firing. I say a good combo to have is BR and SMG. BR to have out constantly, then when you are going into an enclosed space, such as the bunker on High Ground, pull out the SMG. It'll outdo the AR.

Don't waste time going for weapons. If you waste your time aiming for a certain weapon spawn, you'll lose. It's alright to run for a weapon at the start, but dont sit by the sniper spawn for 2 minutes and wait. Also, use this knowledge to your advantage. You know people are going for a predetermined spot before the game starts. You know they wont pass up the power weapons such as the sniper. Stop them. All of their focus will be on getting from point A to point B and wont even think anything can be in the way. Instead, try to keep track of weapon spawn times. If you pick up rockets at 14:00, it should spawn at 11:00 (+or- 3 sec).

There is a program over at You must login or register to view this content. which counts down weapon and power up spawns on your computer, and plays an audio file of the spawns at 30 seconds, 10 seconds, and spawn. VERY helpful to controll the match. Keep your speakers up and go to your TV. Start the program as the game starts, and you'll know when and where every powe weapon is.

Here's what I do on High Ground for instance: Start in base, jump on mongoose, and race straight out front for rockets, time your dismount so you land right on rockets, grab them, and jump over hte barrier, jump and fire at the sniper spawn, if you did this right, your timing should be perfect, and your rocket will hit as they are picking up the sniper. Sometimes you'll be facing an uncoordinated group, and two people will race for the sniper. Double kill. Sometimes people will run towards the sniper but walk by and go for invisibility. Double Kill. It's a great strategy, and you'll end up behind your opponents with 2 or more rockets left. I then try to find a BR and an SMG (AR can be suitable in this situation as this map is more wide open.) I then proceed to hunt around the base/bunker, and then make my way down the side with the sniper/camo and hunt whoever is around there. Doing this, you are in the area of many potential targets. You also are around the spawns for Spartan Laser, Invisibility, Rockets, and Sniper, should they spawn.

Know how to deal with tough situations. For instance, if you are on snowbound and one team is camping the shield with shotgun, grab some plasma grenades. Run towards the shield like you're comming in, then back away before you go in, the shotgun guy should think you are close enough to come out and shoot. Throw a sticky. You may die, but you'll get a kill as well, and take out their more strategic position. It's really good if you can have a friend come behind you to pick up the shotgun.

In Lone Wolves, although it is really, really cheap: The way to win is to steal kills. Sorry, but it happens every match, and you'll find that the one who stays back with a BR and just headshots the two people going at eachother with no shields wins. Spam grenades in the more populated areas, such as the hammer spawn on Epitaph.

That's all for now. I cant tell you ALL my secrets . And you need to find these by yourself, and adapt them to the way you play. Also, never get mad. If you get mad, you play more slopily and put yourself in harms way just to get 1 kill (such as rushing both opponents just for 1 kill...) Read the tips writen by famous MLG players, and watch MLG videos and learn where they setup, what weapon combos they use, etc. You'll become a better player.

Please reply if you found any of this helpful, or if there is something else to add.

P.S.- To those who have lost hope in leveling up, I received my 50 after I was WELL into Brigadier grade 2. So yes, even those of you with bars can level up.

I wont boost you. I believe that everyone should earn it themselves. I'm just here to help, not carry you to 50. So take what I have shown you here, and show friends, and level up with them.

I've decided to post some videos which I think people can learn from here. Just as I said before, if you watch MLG players, you'll learn their tactics and play better.

Lone Wolves KoTH(Notice he always goes for a BR, which corner he camps in, holds back to let other fight, then comes in with 2 BR headshots, and how he comes to the middle.)

2v2 The Pit (Notice where he goes first and how he does it, then see how he anticipates his opponents movements by making them move there by throwing grenades behind them.)

Tsquared Tips 1 A video done by Str8 Rippin's Tsquared. He teaches you how to use BR, Grenades, and time Power ups.

Tsquared Tips 2 A video done by Str8 Rippin's Tsquared. He teaches you secret jumps and how to find them to give you the winning edge.

Tsquared Tips 3 A video done by Str8 Rippin's Tsquared. He teaches all about equipment and the importance of Regenerators, and how to get someone out of yours.

Tsquared Tips 4 A video done by Str8 Rippin's Tsquared. He teaches his strategy on Standoff. Camo is key.

There is also a good guide over at You must login or register to view this content. which is made by professional players from Team Classic. It's got some good videos and tips that really help.

Well, now it's time to start looking at your actual gaming setup. Do you use an HD TV? What kind? Are you using the best video cords and settings? This is where we're going to go over that.

You're going to want a good station to play your games at that will give you the best overall gaming ability. First thing's first. Your screen. What kind of screen are you using? If you are using an HD tv, your TV has video lag. Sry. Now, you're going to look into getting rid of this. First off, you're going to try to get VGA Cables. For those who are unfamiliar, these cables are similar to those found from your Computer to your Monitor. These cables are going to help your refresh rate. Before you buy them, make sure your TV has a VGA input. Almost all new LCD, DLP, and Plasma flat screens have them.

Now, let's hook you up with a sweet screen. You're going to look for a screen that has a 22 inch widescreen display. This is the perfect size to show you everything you need, and isn't too big where as you have to actually look around to see the whole screen. The most important aspect to this is SCREEN DELAY. You're going to look for something that has a 5ms or less screen delay. If it doesn't have it, move along. You can find better. If you can, find a screen that will support 1680x1050 display. MLG uses a Viewsonic.

Next, you're going to want a headset. It is an absolute MUST for FPS's. You will be able to hear everything, even people trying to crouch behind you. MLG uses and endorses the Astro A40 System. Make sure to use the Mixamp, and Optical Cables for optimum performance. Here's My Headset. It is signed by Pro's such as Tsquared, Walshy, FearItSelf, Nexux, Soldi3r187, and Tizoxic.

Now, try to grab a WIRED controller. FInally, keep a clean play area.

Rank System Explination

Playing solo and having high EXP does nothing.

You have 2 factors in TrueSkill. Mu and Sigma.

Mu is your current level, and Sigma is what level you "could" be.

Basically, you have a wide array of what level your Mu could be, and that array is your Sigma. Now, as you play, your Sigma gets smaller and smaller, closing in on your Mu.

here's what one may look like over the course of a few games (blown completely out of porportion)

35-36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43

Here, your Sigma is between 35 and 43. This is the range your level could be between. Now, lets add some games and their result-

WON GAME

36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43-44

What happened here? You won a game, and your level went up. Also, your minimum Sigma went up, and your maximum Sigma went up. Let's keep going.

LOSE GAME

36-37-38-39-40-41-42-43

Alright, so you lost a game. Boo hoo. Well, lets look at the repercusions. Your sigma dropped. Your minimum Sigma is still at 36, but your maximum Sigma is at 43. Luckily, you didn't lose a level.

Here's a few more games-

WIN GAME

37-38-39-40-41-42-43

LOSE GAME

38-39-40-41-42

So, you saw your Sigma and Mu go back and forth, but what happened on that last game? Your Sigma both increased AND decreased. This is because the system is deciding where your Mu should be.

Eventually, after a few games, your Sigma and Mu may come to-

39-40-41

This is what we call "rank lock". This is when the system has pegged you on what level you should be.

How do you get out of this? Stretch your Sigma back out. How? Constant winning. Lots. Of. Constant. Winning. You need to stretch your Sigma out far before you can move your Mu.

Remember, there's one thing we must all remember- This is NOT an RPG. You should not keep leveling up just because you win a lot. The system is just finding what people are at your level, and showing you your TrueSkill level, which in other games, it is hidden.

My experience at MLG 2009 Pro Circuit Meadowlands Event-

Hey guys. Back from MLG Meadowlands 2009.

Man was it awesome. We left Friday morning at 6:00 a.m. and got there about 11:00 a.m. The Meadowlands Expo Center was packed outside waiting to sign in, and it was pouring! Here's a pic of me Saturday when it was sunny. First thing was first. We had to get our hotel room. Then we walked over to the Meadowlands sign in. As we finally got signed in, we walked into the expo center. Our first impressions were that it was going to be crazy.

We started over to the warm up area, and got ready, which mostly involved me finding my glasses, which are hard to find when I only need them for gaming. We got to scrim against Team Carbon for a bit, which totally rocked, even after I assassinated Soviet. Soon, we had to start into our matches.

After our first match, we went over to the Dr. Pepper station to watch Str8 Rippin. After their game, we got to mess around with Tsquared. He was even nice enough to sign my controller! After that, we had to make a stop over by the MLG store and talk to the ladies (dont laugh at my face. They made me laugh when the picture was taken!).

The next day, we hung out with Walshy for a bit. Then it was back to game time. Later, we met up with the Dr. Pepper girls, who ended up in the room next to us, which was cool. We became good friends. After that, it was time to head on over to the Dr. Pepper station to watch Str8 Rippin warm up for the main stage event Saturday night.

Now, it was time to head on over to the Main Stage. First up was Pure Talent vs. The Riot. PT ended it quickly. After that, Str8 Rippin took the stage. I was on the floor on Red Team's (strCool Man (aka Tustin) side. After T2 threw out some tshirts, they sat down and got ready to play. The games started, and the fight got head. Str8 took the first two games in stride, making the score 2-0 in favor of Str8 Rippin. Then, things went downhill, and Believe The Hype came back and won the next 3 games in a row, giving them the win.

Next up was Instict, lead by team captain, Walshy. After some crazy applause, and some funny trash talking, Instinct sat down and got to work. Everyone was sure that a match between Final Boss and Instict was going to be good. The game was theirs in no time, even though Victory X was on his game.

We left on Sunday around 2:00 after we got some practice games in, and made it home in time to watch Triggers Down take the Meadowlands title.

Crazy weekend. Cant wait for Columbus.

Timing Weapon Spawns

In normal matchmaking (not MLG), weapons have their own pre-determined spawn times, depending on map. Most of the time, Rockets is 3:00, Sniper is 2:00, Camo is 3:00, and Overshield is 3:00.

Now, for Camo and Overshield, it will respawn exactly 3:00 after it is picked up. This means, if you touch Camo at 11:50, you'd best be there at 8:50.

Weapons are a little different. Weapons will stay where they are put until picked up. Now, the respawn timer will not start until the person wielding the weapon stands still for TWO seconds. Exactly 2. This means, if you pick up Sniper, the timer will not start it's countdown till you stand in place for those 2 seconds. You can use this timing to your advantage, and maybe put it at an easier time to remember, such as 8:00 exactly.

Let's put together a scenario. You run over and pick up Overshield at 11:24. You then make your way to Sniper, and pick it up at 10:57. You keep running without stopping, and then stand still on S3 with sniper from 10:22 - 10:20.

Can you guess what will happen? Overshield will respawn at 8:24, and Sniper will respawn at 8:20.

Here is a list of weapon respawn times.

MLG uses Drop Spawns. This means, the weapon actually spawns in mid air, which moves the weapon, and it will then start it's countdown 2 seconds after is it still on the ground.

If everything goes smooth, here are the times for weapon spawns on MLG settings:

15 Minute Games
15:00 - Rockets & Sniper
12:26 - Sniper
11:56 - Rockets
9:53 - Sniper
8:53 - Rocket
7:20 - Sniper
5:50 - Rocket
4:47 - Sniper
2:47 - Rocket
2:14 - Sniper

30 Minute Game
30:00 - Rocket & Sniper
27:26 - Sniper
26:56 - Rocket
24:53 - Sniper
23:53 - Rocket
22:20 - Sniper
20:50 - Rocket
19:47 - Sniper
17:47 - Rocket
17:14 - Sniper
14:44 - Rocket
14:41 - Sniper
12:08 - Sniper (Watch out, sniper spawns twice before rocket)
11:41 - Rocket
9:35 - Sniper
8:38 - Rocket
7:02 - Sniper
5:35 - Rocket
4:29 - Sniper
2:32 - Rocket
1:56 - Sniper

When I was learning to memorize these times, I made a type of box-chart time table thing that showed all the times, and what weapon, and taped it to the top and bottom of my screen. It really helped me learn.

Here's a quick Q&A-

Q: What are Drop Spawns?
A: Halo 3's weapon respawns are set based on when the weapon was picked up. Back in Halo 1 & 2, weapons always had a deterimined spawn time. Rockets were always at 12:30, 10:00, 7:30, 5:00, etc. MLG uses Forge to mimic these STATIC spawn times by placing weapons on boxes, and then deleting the box to make the weapon drop for a short time, activating it's spawn counter, similar to how if you die while running with the weapon, and you have to see when the weapon stops in normal matchmaking.

Q: Why do the weapons sometimes not spawn at these times?
A: Well, weapons have to drop from a certain height to activate the spawn timer. Now, if the weapon is picked up before it hits the ground, say someone is waiting on the spawn counting down, then the spawn timer will not activate until they hold still for 2 seconds. This is called Dirtying the spawn. You can do this to your advantage, to control spawn times. However, it can get sort of confusing.

Thanx And I hope These tips help you get that 50..
