Post: New Xbox Shuts off to Prevent RROD
06-21-2010, 05:57 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); We found out that Microsoft stopped using the red ring error system and they combined the chips, reduced to one heat sink, and reduced to one fan. The actual issue that showed the RRoD could still happen, but Microsoft had added something else in to prevent it.
This is from an article on destructiod.com:

It's become a common joke that the new Xbox 360 Slim prevents Red Rings of Death simply because Microsoft took the red lights out. However, it's been revealed that there is a real preventative measure built into the Slim, as opposed to a simple aesthetic avoidance of the issue. The new Xbox 360 SKU voluntarily shuts itself down if it's not ventilating properly, in a bid to avoid damage from overheating.

If the 360 detects that it isn't getting enough ventilation, it will give the player a warning message before entering shutdown mode, whereupon its power light will flash. The system can then be switched on again once the light ceases to flash. The idea is to increase the lifespan of the console by powering down before it gets too hot and suffers internal damage.

A smart idea in theory, but one wonders how annoying a 360 that shuts itself down will be, especially if Microsoft hasn't fixed the issue of overheating in the first place. Has Microsoft fixed the RRoD only to replace it with an even more embarrassing and widespread problem? We'll have to wait and see just how often this shutdown feature needs to kick in before we know for sure. I just have a bad feeling about this, given Microsoft's commitment to making terrible things happen.

guess maybe it will soon be called the RDOD (red dot of death)? it's just a simple preset temp warning, just like computers have so that you can tell your PC to shut down if it reaches a certain temp. i saw this post on egadget and the other pic they showed of the console didn't appear to have improper ventilation. i'm sure someone will build a water cooled xb slim soon Smile

i bet whoever found this wrapped the new xbox in towels just so it over heated to see what happened, they probably covered up all the vents on the xbox just so it over heated

I hope you realize that the "red ring" on the "non-slim" systems is not a fault, but a way to show you what is faulty with your system.

No systems are without it's flaws.

Watch this video, but imagine the three OS'es being the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Wii.
